Fall 2012
One block from the Superfund Site, Koppers, this home owner was granted a cleanup from the EPA for her contaminated property.
Sparing only a few major trees, the entire property was scraped 12” down and all toxic soil was hauled off site and replaced with clean soil. The desire was to turn this property into a food forest.
This once-poisoned land is now a productive food forest paradise.
On less than ½ an acre this property supports: 2 avocado types, 3 banana flavors, a blackberry patch, a blueberry hedge, 2 figs, edible gingers, grape vines, 3 varieties of citrus, a loquat, 2 mulberry trees, papayas, 2 peaches, 2 pecan, 2 persimmon, 3 guava types, a pomegranate, pineapples, several mints, and herbs.
Also equipped with a seasonal garden, along with the perennial foods mentioned above, there is always something happening on this postage-stamp-sized piece of land.
